Transcend

.

I wonder if I were to paint a portrait of enlightenment:
Would the painting be of a man enraptured -
His arms outstretched and his back bent backwards
Embracing whatever he thought he was getting
From above. A smile stretched across his face,
Suspended in time and illumination.

Or would it be the painting of a man tortured
By the pain of being trapped in his skin
Humbled to his knees in acknowledgment of his weakness.
Surrendering at the feet of whoever he thinks
Looms above him. Tears streaming down his face.
I wonder.

  1. its very beautifully thought and captured in words. very deep indeed... I guess both quality combine makes a perfect portrait. just being in top para... could be rare... and for creativity show must go on its life mix of wonder and thunder... keep walking.... every portrait is different than other. i personally like painting characters which i understand , i know... i enjoy that in watercolors... that makes me feel blessed to be trapped in skin, being able to paint... same as ur writing , as i feel...

  2. @Vinod: this poem was written for you, because it's not every day that I wonder about painting... so it was great to see that you were attracted to it! The top paragraph was for those who think getting "happy" is enlightenment - the bottom for whom religion (specifically Christianity or Islam) is the key. The question is how do you choose between characters when you want to paint a portrait of a concept or a conflict of ideas?

  5. @Insia - generally people paint when they feel for it.. when an artist is in happy mood he/she will paint a portrait of nature. And when he/she feels for society and conditions of the people around them then they paint the second one!!!
